Settled with IC System

Today was the settlement conference in Flagstaff, we settled and that’s all I can say.

It was my first time in downtown Flagstaff, so different from Kingman.  While the judge talked to the IC System people, I was in a room with views in several directions.  Flagstaff is ALIVE.

I walked by a cafe with people sitting outside, music, lots of people in the streets so much activity.  In contrast, downtown Kingman features several pawnshops, courts and a couple restaurants.  There isn’t a single cafe with outdoor seating or any cafe that I know of in Kingman.  I mentioned it to a neighbor and he thought it had to do with the college in Flag, but the people I saw didn’t look like students.

On my way home I saw the most amazing chemtrails covering Kingman.  With nothing else to do but watch the sky for a few hours, it was AMAZING to see regular planes and contrails and being able to compare them to this layer of strange expanding trails that ended abruptly as if the the pilot turned off a switch to turn around and then put down another layer.

Got fuel at the Pilot near Kingman and a guy in an old truck with a huge cardboard sign asking for fuel was parked near the ramps.  While getting fueI, I decided to ignore him. But I changed my mind when I saw something about being robbed on the sign.  There’s nothing like a catchy headline and it was a good opportunity to let my dog out of the truck.

It turned out he was a gold miner and when he got back to his camp from getting supplies, his partner had taken off with the equipment and the gold.  That was his story and after talking to him for a bit, I was sure that he was a miner.

He had a big fuel tank in the truck bed and was trying to get it filled up to get back home to Colorado for the winter.  It was a good choice to fill up there at $2/gallon, in Flagstaff fuel was almost $2.40.

I asked whether he didn’t have a credit card and I immediately realized what a stupid question it was.  There are prospectors with $3K Minelabs, $200K motor homes, sat TV/internet and credit cards.  And there are guys like John in their old beat up trucks with some tools and tents.  Credit cards are a huge hassle when you’re out there all summer, mostly cut off from civilization.  He might not even have a bank account.  Not a bad life, but just as 100 years ago, there’s that risk of getting robbed.  If it’s not the bank, it’s your partner.  Sometimes you can’t win.

I gave him $20 and I hope he gets home ok.  I was very glad that my truck made it without any problems (unlike a couple weeks ago when I drove to Phoenix) and I felt like it was time to share a little.  Pay forward, or pay back, whatever ...
