I know that I read about a lawsuit against ConsumerInfo.com/Experian over the credit monitoring service. I'll definitely post info here once I remember where that was, have to look through my notes.
In the meantime, DO submit your complaint to the BBB, I read that the FTC may actually look at these complaints if there are enough of them.
The "unsatisfactory" BBB record:
Nature of Business
This company's business is providing memberships to credit monitoring and property evaluation services.
Bureau File Experience
We rate this company as having an unsatisfactory business performance record based on a pattern of unanswered customer complaints alleging unauthorized credit card charges.
Complainants allege the company charges for credit reports which are advertised as free. Customers complain they go online to order a free copy of their credit report and later discover they unknowingly signed up for a credit report monitoring membership. Many are unaware of the membership until they notice a $79.95 unauthorized charge on their credit card. Other complainants allege inability to access credit report information even after the monthly service charge of $79.95 is applied.
The company responds to some complaints by issuing refunds or sending the free credit report. Other complaints are addressed by requests for additional information to locate customer accounts. The company generally fails to address the allegations regarding their misleading advertisements for free credit reports. Some complaints remain unresolved, meaning customers are not satisfied with the company's response. Many other complaints remain unanswered.
This company uses a questionable marketing method known as negative option cancellation. With this method, products and services are sent to the consumer unsolicited, and unauthorized charges appear on credit cards. Usually, materials sent with the product or service will allow a specified time period for cancellation and return without penalty or obligation. However, many consumers overlook the advisory, and are unaware of the charge until they receive their next monthly credit card statement. In some cases, the customers find they are unable to contact the company to arrange returns or ask for credit.
The Better Business Bureau does not endorse, recommend or disapprove of any product, service or company.

They are still at taking money from innocent people, I was at church when they decided my account needed to be charged $79.95. I am down to the bank in the morning hoping they will reverse these charges.Everyone keep me posted.
Posted by: Nancy at November 14, 2003 07:42 PM
This is the second time they do this to me. Now they are telling me that they can only find record of one charge & refund from a year ago and cannot address the second charge posted last week. Their email server also will no longer allow me to reply or send them additional emails concerning this recent charge. No doubt they have flagged my email address as a "nuisance". Have your bank or credit company deal with them, they may not act so academically challenged then.

Same thing happened to me. The $79.95 charge appeared on a Sunday afternoon.

I was just charged 79.95 also from CIC credit monitioring. Nothing I signed up for.
Posted by: joan at December 1, 2003 12:44 PM
They told me that I had signed up for the service previously and so they charged me. After that they said it would take 7 to 10 business days to refund my money. This was not okay with me so I complained more. They said they cancelled it and it would be in my account with in two days. Five days later the money was back in my account only to have them charge me again a month later. I have had it. I have to switch bank accounts now.
Posted by: Leanne at December 2, 2003 11:33 AM
I,too, have been charged by this company and whereas I was inquiring into credit check, they did so WITHOUT my permission. To whom do I complain about getting a refund for a service that I DIDN'T EVEN ORDER? Someone please tell me that their is some sort of action being taken (legally, of course) that will prevent this in the future. I'm going to inform my bank of this in the hopes that they will not allow any future charges.
Respectfully,

I am currently working with Capital One's fraud department over the $79.95 charge to my card.
Posted by: D.E. Berger at December 15, 2003 08:40 AM
I hope that'll work better for you than for me. I had two chargebacks with Capital One and after stringing me along for a couple months and making me mail a bunch of stuff, they debited the charges again. It's one of my claims against them.
Posted by: Christine Baker at December 15, 2003 12:20 PM
I too have been had by this company. Both my wife and I signed up for the 'free' service and were swindled out of $79.95 each. Both of us sat on hold for a long time. We both were told the charges would be reversed and they were not.
I am livid mad and would like to see this company sued.

I too have been charged by this company and got my money back (at least for now).
A month ago I got a proposal for a free credit-report from experian after Capitol-One rejected my application for a car-loan.
I've ordered this free report. I know for sure that experian never mentioned this CIC company, the 79.95 or credit-monitoring.
The credit-card support told me that I must call CIC and try to solve this issue.
Thanks to this web-page and a couple more (see links below) I was prepared. I called them demanding my money back. They never admited that I didn't authorized them, but asked me if I want to cancel my membership. So I said "yes". They had the nurves to say it may take up to 10 days.
Here are some links to others who suffer from this company:

I called my credit card company and they did a chargeback on the 79.95 and closed the account, so I at least got out of this one. I found it helps if you tell the credit card company that the BBB has issued a scam warning.

Oh my god! I am a college student and it's 12:34am and as I'm thinking about my tuition payment, I look on my bank statement on-line to find two charges or 79.95 on my account--unknowingly of course. So now that I have looked up "CIC Credit Monitor SVC," and the numerous complaints, I am scared that I am going to be shit out of 159.90. What is going on here? I better get my Goddamn money refunded in the morning... AHHHHH.

Add another one to the list. This kind of scam needs to effin' stop. First I had to deal with someone charging things using my Check card number, and when I went to check my credit file I get this. I think we should all pull our money out of banks and financial institutions until they can learn how to treat customers with respect and honesty. Is it really that hard?

Posted by: deltta at January 8, 2004 10:26 AM
I had asked for the "free" credit report over one year ago. I understood that if I didn't opt-out within the first 30 days that I would be charged, however, my understanding of the agreement was that my membership was for one year. I never recieved any renewal notices at any time and I've been charged once again. Because of this charge, I'm not able to pay certain important bills. At least not until my next check comes in. I looked at their website for the opt-out option and couldn't find it. If not out right dishonest it is most cerainly decieving.

I am OUTRAGED at my acct being charged for something that was supposed to be a free 30 day trial and stating my card will not be charged. Well, of course my card was charged, like everyone else, and caused my account to be overdrawn. I not nly asked for my 79.95 back inmy acct but also for the overdraft charges to be included. I was informed by a rep named "Inelda", who was hispanic that my acct would be credited withing 7-10 days for all charges. That would give her until 1/26/04 @10:30 a.m to have the funds back in my acct or i will be contacting not only the bbb but a lawyer, also. I was also sent this ridiculous email begging me to rethink. ARE THESE PEOPLE CRAZY OR JUST CROOKS-1. my acct was charged without authorization for something that was supposed to be FREE FOR 30 DAYS.
2. You cause my acct to be overdrawn, which is another problem
3. the only was to dispute the charge is to have my card cancelled and be sent another one, another incovenience.
But, you still have the nerve to send me this ridiculous email. Makes you think. Here is a copy of the email sent to me.

I want to express my concern over the "free credit reports" being offered by the so called "reputable credit bureaus." If you have been denied credit, go on-line to request your free "report" that you are entitled to, why would you want the service, especially at a cost which would be placed on your "credit card", which is probably one of the reasons your credit may have been denied. I walked through the sign up process. Nowhere did they give you the opportunity to opt out of this offer and only receive your report.
Posted by: Observer at January 18, 2004 08:35 PM
There are MANY reasons to sign up for a credit monitoring service, especially when people are disputing data and intend to sue or when getting the lowest interest rates and insurance premiums is important.
However, there are better ways to monitor your credit than to go through ConsumerInfo.com.
They are now being sued in a class action for their poor disclosures and deceptive practices.
Posted by: Christine at January 18, 2004 10:07 PM
Do not attempt to cancel with Consumerinfo.com by email. I sent many emails to them which I never received any responses from. I sent the first one as a direct reply to the signup email which I received even. I never got any response from them. I put off calling them right away because I am quite busy at work during their hours of operation. This lead to me just now being another sucker charged $79.95 due to their deceptive business practices. I hear their damn adds on the radio all the time, which now is just making me even more angry. I will be attempting to contact them by phone now and hopefully get this resolved soon, if not then I will push on my back to handle them with it. Luckily I can tell my bank to look at their BBB record and that seems convincing enough that the charges to my account would be questionable. THanks for doing this site, Christine.
Posted by: Brent at January 23, 2004 09:08 PM
Make sure you record the call.
E-MAIL is the very best way to cancel, along with fax.
Do you really think they'll admit to your phone calls?
Request a chargeback for the charges, there should be no problem since you cancelled in WRITING.
And of course, try to get in on a class action.

Class action attorneys like this stuff, Experian has deep pockets, they know they'll get paid when they settle of get judgments.

I was turned down for a card and was told to get my free credit report to see why I chekced it out and I was fine, then a month later I received the $79.95 charge one my account for some monitor servce, I called them at 1-877-513-4785 bitched for about 20 mins until I contacted a supervisor whom then finally removed the charge and cancelled my account only after I had threatened with legal action. I discussed it with my bank about the overdraft fees and they were kind enough to remove those.

You folks are Not alone. I found out this morning that my father's credit card had been charged by these people a Second time.
During the Early part of last year (January 2003) I signed up for a FREE copy of my credit report. I had read the agreement, and saw where the card would be charged if I did not cancel within 30 days. I cancelled the Next day, and the card was still charged. We never got satisfaction from the company about That charge, just a giant run around.
It has now been just over a year, and once again the same charge has showed up on the same credit card.
This time, we are handling things a bit differently. My father has already called the credit card company to dispute the charge, and is personally calling CIC Credit Moniter Svc rather than having me do so. When I attempted to log in, since the card had been charged again for the "ongoing membership" I was informed that no such account existed by the website. Since I use the same Login Name for all online websites that require such, there is NO WAY that it could be listed under a different name.
My personal guess is that this company full of frauds deleted the account when I canceled, but charged the credit card anyway and kept the CC info on file for future charges. That would certainly explain why the card was charged (again) but no account exists in their database.
One thing is certain, if they give us a run around this time, I'm going Straight to my lawyer to file suit against them.
I'm definately fed up - and am Not going to take this either calmly or lying down.

But I wonder what percent they get. With my case I paid 9.95 for my report. So why don't you make this available to lawyers for a class action?

Hello friends. You might be surprised to learn that it appears "Experian" the mega-buck "credit check" giant, seems to be closely related to CIC and the "79.95" rip offs we have all incurred.
One of the first posts here, was quite helpful in my search with the identification of "ConsumerInfo.com/Experian" which in turn led me to... http://www.creditsuit.org/blog/archives/000310.html
I'd love to see a federal class action lawsuit. We need an attorney worth his salt. Any suggestions?
By the way, may I ak, is there any kind of a federal watch-dog department that governs these "credit agencies?" Or, is it as I belive, they pretty much govern themselves. Seems to me, to be much too much power for a business corporation.
Anyway, thanks for all your information. I hope this helps as well.
Sincerely,
El Stevereno

Steve, the FTC is supposed to regulate CRAs, and you might find my FTC filing interesting. Go to http://www.creditsuit.org/ and check the links in the right column. It's very little legalese, mostly a listing of major FCRA violations the FTC refuses to pursue.
There are also several law firms looking for documentation to start a national class action.
I keep posting:
"Supply a statement for attorneys to take the class action nationwide.
http://forum.creditcourt.com/discus/messages/3301/3301.html"
Unfortunately, most people just want to get their money back and couldn't care less how many others get screwed.
Even the best attorney can't file suit without plaintiffs.

I also have been scammed. I received the 79.95 charge from CIC Credit Monitor SVC .
I am going toi call them and then call my credit card company.
Posted by: Dawn at March 24, 2004 03:38 AM
I had an institution run my credit report and they reported my report was unsatisfactory. In addition I received a letter from experian saying if I contact them I can get a free copy of my credit report online but, when I went online they said it would be a charge to get my report. I don't know about anybody else but I want my credit report sent to me free of charge.

I signed up for a "free" credit report from Yahoo Finance.com and just got a charged on my CC for $79.95. I am going to try to get a refund...any ideas how I can do that?
Posted by: Patricia at April 5, 2004 09:15 AM
You didn't read the "terms". That's why there's the class actions - hidden fee disclosures.

Why could I not have fould this site before logging on to theirs. It happened to me I was charged 79.95 today on my credit card. Can this company not be stopped. I have not received one single thing from them except an inital credit report and that was 6 weeks ago and I have not heard from them since until today when I noticed the charge on my account.

I do not have a mortgage Please take this off.
Posted by: Anna Mae Snyder at April 14, 2004 07:12 AM
I too just received my bank statement and found , you guessed it, $79.95 taken from my account by CIC. I will contact the bank in the am and see what I can have done. I have a cancellation number so maybe that will help.
Posted by: Tamara Sudduth at April 14, 2004 09:53 PM
Charged my card 79.95. Problem is I NEVER FINISHED THE SIGN UP PROCESS!!!!
Posted by: Dan Enachioaie at April 16, 2004 08:12 PM
Despite the fact that I cancelled my "membership" 20 minutes after seeing my credit report online, the REAL surprise was the $79.95 charge on my bank card the next month. I've filed a complaint with the BBB (who categorizes ConsumerInfo.com and its 10 pseudonyms as "Unsatisfactory"), but despite barraging ConsumerInfo.com with e-mails, I haven't been able to get ahold of anyone.
Posted by: Amy Brennan at April 19, 2004 03:37 AM
Hey, these people hit me too! Ordered the "free credit on April 9,2004 and when I got my credit card statement, which closed on April 13, 2004, the $79.95 charge was there. In addition to filing a BBB complaint, file a complaint with your attorney general's office. You can Google it for your state.

There are class actions in California and Illinois.
Posted by: Christine at April 19, 2004 12:14 PM
I was zapped by these scammers to the tune of 80 bucks myself. How can I get this charge reversed? Fortunately, both my parents are lawyers and I will raise serious hell if this company does not take care of this PROMPTLY.
Posted by: Steven at April 20, 2004 08:01 PM
they got me too
Posted by: don at April 25, 2004 11:26 PM
I requested a credit report from you on 4-20-04, Please disregard my request. I do not want this charged to my credit card. Thanking you in Advance. Please let me know
Posted by: Darin Bradley at April 28, 2004 08:55 AM
well...they got my too! My charge for 79.95. I agree with the person who wrote ahead of me, I NEVER FINISHED THE APPLICATION! I never got far enough to even give them any credit card info. My thing is that I see how "free" the checks are, and if I have to give a credit card number, I just stop. That's why I am so ticked off about this charge! I have filed my complaint with Discover and hope they can work something out. This is insane, and has got to stop!!!!!
Posted by: Stacy Hall at April 29, 2004 07:34 AM
I don't understand how they could have your credit card # if you didn't give it to them.
Why doesn't anybody want to find out?
Posted by: Christine at April 29, 2004 01:31 PM
Is all this info being compiled for a class action suit? If so, I was also scammed by them for the $79.95 annual fee. I received my free credit report and then cancelled the service. No response from them to my email.
Posted by: Frank at May 1, 2004 03:39 PM
I have been charged for this free service as well and never recieved anything from them. This is awful that companies are feeding off of consumers instead of finding a real product to offer.
Posted by: Heather at May 9, 2004 07:32 PM
It is, and that's what people voted for. Not a majority, just enough to accelerate the elimination of peoples' rights dramatically.
And Frank, there are 2 class actions I know of, one in Illinois and another in California, and several attorneys are looking at class actions in other states, but at least one was very discouraged that the consumers he contacted didn't want to be part of a class.
I am starting a new forum about this and will be posting more info there.
Posted by: Christine at May 10, 2004 01:23 AM
i, too got ripped off. i signed up for the free credit report and they said they would send me an email. i never got the email and now they charged me. i dont know how to cancel it. could someone send me an email as to where to go to cancel this thing.
Posted by: beau at May 10, 2004 08:59 PM
I never requested a credit report and I STILL see a charge from Cic Credit Monitoring on my cc.
The only Credit reporting stuff Ive done in the past two months was use an accredited firm to find credit reports on my new tenants.
Gonna call the CC and dispute the charges.
Posted by: Jawaan at May 17, 2004 06:37 AM
when i called my bank regarding the 79.99 charge they gave me the following #. I called that and cancelled today being told i would be refunded w/i 10 bank days....we'll see. this is the #...800.220.2626. of course the woman tried to convince me to go with other services they offerred but after getting a bit tempermental she agreed to cancel me. good luck all!
Posted by: happe at May 17, 2004 09:54 AM
This also happened to me, but in a larger scale. Upon shopping for my mother's birthday, a merchant told me my debit card was declined. A call to my bank revealed CIC Credit Monitor had posted 19 charges of $79.95 to my account all on the same day. Had I not caught it, they would have totally depleated my account. My bank was able to reverse these charges, but another one sneaked through. I have never heard of CIC Credit Monitor before this and have never employed their services for a credit record. Please, everyone be careful with your account and personal information and watch out for these scammers!
Posted by: D. Andreason at May 20, 2004 01:02 PM
WOW, 19 charges!!!
If anyone actually wants to do something about this, please post at the new Fight Back! forum at http://www.fight-back.us/forum/ and/or join one of the class actions.
And of course remember who you have to thank for this crap:
Don't vote for Bush!

Oh my goodness!!!!! There are others?! I can't believe this they have charged me twice. Once for a supposed three bureau credit report that I never ordered and once for a supposed renewal. When I call about the $39.95 charge they stated that they would shut off any renewal but could not refund my money because I used the services which was looking at my supposed "Free" credit report. Then,....today I receive a charge on my visa for $89.95. Again, I call and this time I am told that the automatic renewal was never shut off and I should be receiving my refund in 7 to 10 business days. I ask the rep for some kind of confirmation and she states that they cannot give confirmation of cancellation. I will just have to take her word for it!!! Are you kidding me! So I ask her if they are listed with the BBB and of course she says no. So I ask for a physical address at which to serve papers of coure they cannot disclose it. So I cancelled my Visa to make sure that this does not happen again. Can you believe this company!? Someone please shut them down!

We have been dealing with CIC Credit Mon SVC for 2 months now. When we were first charged 7.95 on our credit card statement we called ? what it was and demanded it be cancelled. The next month the same charge showed up so we called again and was told when we called to cancel the first time it had already went into the next month bill cycle. We demanded that it be reversed the company refused. Something needs to be done in reference to this Company they need to be shut down or investigated for fraud !!!
Posted by: Morgan at May 29, 2004 07:22 AM
You can also file a complaint at www.ifccfbi.gov/complaint
Posted by: morgan at May 29, 2004 07:56 AM
Same here.. but mine was only $8.95. I just fear they'll keep doing it. Can you stop charges w/ your bank if you use a VISA? If you do that, will that reflect poorly on your credit report for refused charges?
Posted by: mike at May 30, 2004 06:45 PM
You can't just "refuse" charges. Find out what they're billing you for and why first. If you ordered some service, cancel. If you didn't order, request the refund.
Disputes don't impact on your credit, but if you ordered something you won't get the credit.
If you do dispute, you need to WRITE to the address on your statement for BILLING DISPUTES within 60 days from the statement date.
Posted by: Christine at May 31, 2004 12:57 AM
I signed up for their "free" reports about a month ago, and cancelled the service w/in a half-hour. Once I did, I never received notification, and stupid me forgot all about it till yesterday. Having read everything on here, I'm scared to call them and request a cancellation & refund until I have talked to my bank (my VISA is a check-card... another stupid move) about what I can do. My last bank said they could do nothing in situations like this, we'll see what this one says.
Posted by: mike at May 31, 2004 07:50 AM
You do have the right to dispute and they MUST investigate your dispute if you submit it in writing. A few years ago I got about $900 for Ebay fraud credited by my bank after a PayPal auction purchase funded with my VISA check card. Credit cards are still better, but if the Visa/MC symbol is on the card and you used it as a credit card, I believe you have the same rights as for credit card purchases.

I have read alot of everyones comments and this too happened to me. Hopefully I can clear some air and confusion with concerns. I spoke with my credit card company to dispute the charge when I was transferred to someone in the fraud department who was all too familiar with this scenario. Although my CC company was willing to dispute the charge (chargeback), she informed me to contact CIC Credit Montioring and ask for the credit! Shocked, she informed me that I must have voluntarily clicked on an internet pop-up or add banner advertising "Free Credit Report" anytime within the last 6 months or year or so ago. In order to get the free credit report you must sign up for a free 30 day trial and ENTER all of your important information such as (SS#, Personal Information and CREDIT CARD #). IF you do not cancel the membership in 30 days you will be charged their yearly fee of $79.95. Since most people do not read the fine print or "Terms of Service", they do not get to see that they have authorized CIC to charge their credit card the yearly fee if they don't cancel their membership. Now this brought back some memories of me doing this over a year ago! No wonder why i didn't recognize the charge so recently. I asked my credit card company to cancell my credit card and issue me a new one so that I won't ever have to worry about CIC charging my credit card again in the future.
My CC company told me that they deal with CIC at least 3-4 times a day on this same issue and not to worry about giving them your SS# to get your credit back. You have to since you gave it to them as a security measure when you signed up for the service in the first place.
When contacting CIC for credit be sure to get a name of who you spoke to, write the date you spoke to them on a calander, ask for a confirmation number. It can take up to 30 days to see the credit show back up on your statement. If you do not, then contact your bank or credit card institution for further assistance.
Lesson to be learned. Nothing is ever really FREE! Read the fine print, TERMS OF SERVICE/AGREEMENT etc... before ever giving your credit card and personal information over the internet. Companies make money off of our laziness to read the fine print.
